Federal Judge Refuses to Block Trump’s Mail-In Voting Order — Delivering a Major Win for Election Integrity

A Washington D.C. federal court just handed President Trump a significant legal victory, allowing his executive order restricting mail-in ballots to stand — at least for now — as Democrats scramble ahead of November’s midterms.

In a ruling released Thursday, U.S. District Judge Carl Nichols — a Trump appointee — declined to issue a preliminary injunction blocking two of the most critical elements of President Trump’s mail-in voting executive order. The plaintiffs — including the NAACP and the League of United Latin American Citizens — had argued the order could disenfranchise millions of voters. The judge wasn’t buying it.

WHAT HAPPENED

Trump signed the mail-in voting executive order in March, directing the Department of Homeland Security to compile verified “state citizenship lists” of eligible U.S. voters in each state. The order also directed the U.S. Postal Service to restrict election mail delivery only to individuals who appear on those verified lists.

Democrats and voting rights organizations immediately filed lawsuits, arguing the order was unconstitutional — that the power to regulate elections rests with states and Congress, not the president. They demanded a preliminary injunction to block it before the midterm elections, warning it would sow “chaos and confusion” across the country.

Judge Nichols flatly rejected that argument Thursday, concluding that since no federal agency had yet taken concrete steps to implement the order, the plaintiffs couldn’t demonstrate they’d suffered real harm. “Plaintiffs may, of course, renew their motions if and when those future actions occur,” Nichols wrote. “Until then, however, Plaintiffs cannot show that preliminary injunctive relief is warranted.”

A separate lawsuit from Democratic-led states is pending in federal court in Boston, with a hearing scheduled for June 2. That judge — an Obama appointee — may rule differently. The legal fight is far from over. But today’s ruling is a significant early victory for the Trump administration’s election integrity agenda.

WHY THIS MATTERS

Democrats’ reaction tells you everything. They rushed to court before a single ballot was printed, before a single “citizenship list” was completed, before a single voter was affected. They weren’t fighting a real, present harm — they were fighting the very IDEA that elections should be limited to verified citizens.

That is the core of this battle. Trump’s executive order doesn’t remove a single legal voter. It simply asks that before you receive a mail-in ballot, your eligibility is CONFIRMED against federal government data. These are the same Democrats who spent four years insisting the 2020 election was beyond reproach. If that’s true, what are they so afraid of?

The order also comes at a critical time. Republicans are defending razor-thin House and Senate majorities in November, and every legally cast ballot matters. Democrats know this. Their panic in the courtroom Thursday wasn’t about “disenfranchisement” — it was about CONTROL.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

This is the same party that fought voter ID laws for decades. The same party that opposed signature verification. The same party that called for mail-in ballots to go to every registered address in America — including outdated rolls with dead voters, moved voters, and people who haven’t lived in a state in years. And now they’re calling a citizenship verification list an “attack on democracy.”

While working Americans paid their taxes, raised their families, and assumed their votes were being counted fairly — the left was working overtime to make sure the system stayed as wide open as possible. President Trump is closing that door. The courts, at least today, agree he has the right to try.

OUR TAKE

Every legal American citizen deserves to know their vote counts — and isn’t being canceled out by a ballot that never should have been issued. That’s not voter suppression. That’s the bare minimum of a functioning republic. President Trump is right to fight for it, and today’s ruling is proof the legal system isn’t fully rigged against election integrity — yet.
