Trump’s DOJ Finally Indicts Raúl Castro for the Murder of Four Americans the Left Forgot

After 30 years of silence, the Trump administration just charged a communist dictator with the murder of four American citizens — and the mainstream media can barely bring itself to cover it.

On May 20, 2026, the Trump Department of Justice unsealed a federal indictment charging former Cuban President Raúl Castro with conspiracy to kill United States nationals, four individual counts of murder, and destruction of aircraft. The charges stem from the February 24, 1996 shootdown of two unarmed civilian planes operated by Brothers to the Rescue — a Cuban-American humanitarian group — over international waters in the Florida Straits. Four men died: Armando Alejandre Jr., Carlos Costa, Mario de la Peña, and Pablo Morales. Three of the four were United States citizens. The indictment also charged five Cuban MiG fighter pilots alleged to have carried out the attack.

WHAT HAPPENED

Brothers to the Rescue was founded in 1991 by Cuban-American pilot José Basulto. The group flew light aircraft over the waters between Cuba and Florida, searching for Cuban refugees attempting to escape the communist regime on makeshift rafts. By 1996, the group had rescued over 4,000 people and become a powerful symbol of resistance against the Castro regime.

On February 24, 1996 — Cuba’s national holiday — Cuban Air Force MiG fighter jets intercepted and destroyed the two civilian planes over international waters. The United Nations’ International Civil Aviation Organization later confirmed the planes were unarmed and outside Cuban airspace at the time of the attack. According to the federal indictment, the order to fire came directly from the chain of command under Raúl Castro, who then served as Cuba’s defense minister. Both Raúl and Fidel Castro are named in the indictment as the final decision-makers who authorized the attack.

Acting U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche announced the indictment at a ceremony at Miami’s Freedom Tower — known as “the Ellis Island of the South” for Cuban Americans — on May 20, Cuban Independence Day. The timing was deliberate. “For nearly 30 years, the families of four murdered Americans have waited for justice,” Blanche said. “If you kill Americans, we will pursue you. No matter who you are. No matter what title you hold.”

A grand jury in Miami had originally returned the indictment on April 23. Six defendants total are named: Raúl Castro and five Cuban MiG pilots. The DOJ noted that a Cuban intelligence spy network operating inside Florida had fed information to the Castro regime about Brothers to the Rescue before the attack, and multiple members of that network were charged more than two decades ago. One agent was previously convicted of murder conspiracy in connection with the shootdown.

WHY THIS MATTERS / WHAT THEY’RE NOT TELLING YOU

Obama sat across from Raúl Castro and shook his hand in 2016 — six years after those four families buried their sons and brothers. Biden did nothing. For thirty years, Democrat administrations treated the Castro regime as a diplomatic partner rather than a criminal enterprise that murdered American citizens.

That’s not diplomacy. That is A BETRAYAL of every Cuban-American family who lost someone to that regime. The families of Armando Alejandre Jr., Carlos Costa, Mario de la Peña, and Pablo Morales spent three decades asking the same question: why won’t our government pursue the man who killed our sons? And for thirty years, the answer from Washington was silence.

The mainstream media is treating this as a minor foreign policy footnote. They’re not telling you that this indictment is historic — no foreign head of state has ever been charged by a U.S. grand jury for the murder of American citizens on this scale. They’re not telling you that this is the Trump DOJ doing in one year what three Democrat administrations refused to do in three decades.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

This indictment sends a message that extends far beyond Cuba. Every foreign regime that has targeted or killed American citizens is now on notice: the Trump administration will not let those crimes age out of public memory. The same approach that brought military pressure on Iran now reaches into the legal system to hold communist dictators accountable.

While the Biden DOJ was busy targeting political opponents and parents at school board meetings, four American families were waiting. Trump’s DOJ found time to do what was right — even if it took unsealing a secret indictment on the 30th anniversary of the crime, on Cuba’s Independence Day, in front of the building that served as the welcoming hall for generations of Cuban refugees.

That is not coincidence. That is a statement.

OUR TAKE

Raúl Castro ordered the murder of four Americans. He did it in broad daylight over international waters. He was never charged — not under Clinton, not under Obama, not under Biden. It took Donald Trump to say enough.

Whether or not Castro ever faces a courtroom — he is 94 years old and Cuba has no extradition treaty with the United States — this indictment matters. It is a declaration that America has not forgotten. That American lives have value. That the United States government will pursue justice even when it takes thirty years.

This is what America First looks like when it reaches the Department of Justice.
